The authors of the research said they still aren’t sure how or why Actos increases patient’s risk for developing cancer.  Overall individuals with type 2 diabetes have about a 40% higher risk of developing bladder cancer than individuals who do not take the drug.

Some physicians believe that this may be because people with this type of diabetes have increased levels of insulin, a chemical produced by the pancreas to help digest food.

Diabetes and Actos

The National Institutes of Health says diabetes affects approximately  26 million people in the U.S. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the autoimmune disease and is responsible for $116 billion in medical costs in the U.S. each year.

Soon after the approval of Actos, another thiazolidinedione called Rezulin, was taken down from the shelves because numerous reports surfaced regarding people that developed fatal liver disease after taking the drug.

More cases came forward after people took Actos or Avandia and developed congestive heart disease which pushed the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association to issue a warning for diabetics taking Actos because they were at an increased risk of developing heart disease and bladder cancer.
