Man Drives Jeep on Philly Runway

A Pennsylvania man is arrested and charged after taking his Jeep for a joy ride on the Philadelphia International Airport runway.

Kenneth Richard Mazik, 24, of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania now faces charges of driving under the influence, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, and reckless endangerment. Mazik reportedly pulled his 1999 Jeep Cherokee into the driveway for a gate. He then put his car in reverse and sped through a fence where construction workers were working. Mazik continued to drive the length of one runway and before crossing over onto a parallel runway and driving back. Police were finally able to catch up to Mazik and apprehend him.

The scene caused the airport to be shut down for 30 minutes “out of an abundance of caution,” states airport spokeswoman Victoria Lupica.

Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan, who heads the Philadelphia Police Department’s homeland security and counterterrorism division states the event was not terrorism related. He said K-9 units inspected MazIk’s Jeep for explosives or other hazardous material, but found none.

It is unknown if Mazik has an attorney.
